Catalogues of the main collections

CATALOGUES OF BOOKS

  • Alphabetical Catalogue – owing to differences in the alphabets of the books, acquired and stored in the National Library, the library Alphabetical Catalogue is in three series:
    1. Catalogues of the books in Bulgarian;
    2. Catalogue of the books in other languages, written in Cyrillic (Russian, Ukraininan, Byelorussian, Serbian etc.);
    3. Catalogue of the books in Latin alphabet.
      The Catalogue of the books in Latin alphabet is in two series: Books, acquired in the National Library until 1977 and books, acquired after 1978. This division is purely formal. It became necessary when began the work on the preparation of a printed catalogue.
      The Catalogue of the books in Latin alphabet includes the catalogue descriptions of the books in all languages, using the Latin alphabet (original works and translations).
  • Systematic Catalogue
    The Systematic Catalogue reveals the contents of the library’s collections through  systematical arrangement of the catalogue descriptions, based on the classification, adopted by the National Library.
    The Systematic Catalogue of the St. St.Cyril and Methodius National Library is in three series, due to changes in the classification schemes in 1960 and 1993. In each section of knowledge are arranged firstly the catalogue cards in Cyrillic and after that – in Latin alphabet (in a general alphabetical order, with no division according to languages).
  • Subject Catalogue
    The Subject Catalogue reveals the content of the library’s collections by pointing to literature on concrete issues and subjects, arranged alphabetically. The catalogue’s cards, which indicate the literature about these issues and subjects, are arranged after the subject headings.
    In the Subject Catalogue are not presented: fiction, manuals up to the 8th class, collections with mixed content or collections, which do not have any specific subject.

    1. Alphabetical and chronological catalogues of old printed, rare and valuable Bulgarian and foreign editions (Greek, Walachian, Russian, Serbian etc.);
    2. Alphabetical and chronological catalogues of rare miniature editions;
    3. Catalogue of Periodicals from the Revival Period;
    4. Lists of manuscripts from the Slavonic Manuscripts and Greek and other foreign manuscripts collections;

    8. DEFTERI Catalogue – chronological catalogue of the Ottoman financial registers, kept in the collections of the Oriental Department;
    9. Alphabetical catalogue of collections – collections in the archives of the Oriental Department.
    1. The Union catalogue of foreign books, published after 1944 and acquired in central libraries, the major research libraries and official libraries in Sofia.
    2. The catalogue runs in two series: foreign books in Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. Chronologically it is divided into two parts: the 1944-1979 period and since 1980.
    3. Since 1995 work is in progress on an electronic Union catalogue of foreign books.
    1. Foreign periodical editions in the leading research libraries in Bulgaria, published every 2-3 years, covers the period since 1900.
    2. Information since 1984 is also distributed as an Union catalogue of foreign periodicals in Bulgaria.
